Fragment of a fresco depicting winged
sirens who advocate the insignia of the Bishops Giovanni della Porta (1131-1139)
and Tommaso Regolano (1504-1510).
The decoration, which once ran along
the whole perimeter of the basilica, shows the whole set of coats of arms of bishops and
archbishops who had governed the diocese
until then. For its realization the medieval
mullioned windows were walled up, then opened up again in the latest restoration.
The decoration is part of the transformation
of the basilica of the Crucifix implemented
after the Council of Trent.
